Morecambe proms, piers, jetties and a Tower!

Up until the 1970’s there had been two piers: The “West End” and “Central”. “The Stone Jetty” is inbetween the former two piers and next to The Midland Hotel which fortunately still also survives

Stone Jetty, the Ship breaking yard and the original Midland Hotel and about 1920

the “sea view” residents of the original (1848) Midland Hotel had an interesting view of the ship breaking yard (hopefully they didn’t make a lot of noise ;) )

The BFI (British Film Institute) have some great historic films from Morecambe:

BFI movie 1898 “Morecambe Parade” (2 mins – opens in new tab)

great pictures of people walking along the promenade

BFI movie 1901 “Morecambe Sea Front” ( 7 mins – opens in new tab)

Movie taken from a horse drawn carriage heading north towards Stone Jetty

Following Blackpool’s lead Morecambe decided that it should have a tower too! Unfortunately they ran out of money and then during WWI it was dismantled for scrap
